East_Ballina_Landcare_180-2.jpgThe East Ballina Landcare group is a part of the larger Richmond Landcare Organisation. But it sets a good example in showing that local groups who are motivated and passionate can accomplish much.

East_Ballina_Landcare_1-320.jpg A great example was the recent (October 2007) Weedbusters Field Day where people from local Landcare, Wildlife, Bushland-Friendly Nurseries, Surfing and other coastal organisations and individuals were asked to lend a hand at Shelly Beach. The day was a great success as there was a lot to see and do including: Stalls, Demonstrations, Displays, Guided Tours, Talks, as well as cheap food and drinks.

The aims of the day were to: enhance community awareness of the value of a clean, safe beach and the importance of native vegetation and habitat for a healthy environment; inform the public about weed control plans, policies and strategies; demonstrate weed control techniques and weed identification; show-and-tell the adjacent wetland area currently under regeneration through an Envirofund Grant, and bring all beach users together to celebrate the natural assets and potential of Shelly Beach.

The East Ballina Landcare group is now looking to make this an annual event as many people were wanting more. The group is active through out the year so there is no time like the present to get involved.
